What Other Filmmakers Tell Me About Working With My Wife
When I talk with other people in video production, working with Jessica often comes up. In this Married to Production clip, I describe the encouragement I hear from other filmmakers. They notice that we work together, whether that means helping on set or doing the editing.
That response is part of my experience in the industry. It is not a claim that every couple should start a business together, or that working together automatically makes a relationship easier. It is a look at the support I have heard from people who understand what production involves.
People in the same field recognize the work
A viewer usually sees the finished video. Someone who has spent time on a production can also recognize the work around it: the help on set, the decisions made during a shoot and the editing afterward. In the clip, those are the kinds of contributions I mention when describing what other filmmakers say to me.
For anyone talking about a partner's role in a business, being specific is useful. Instead of stopping at “we work together,” explain the work each person contributes. That makes the conversation more concrete without turning it into a claim about how every partnership should operate.
Encouragement is different from a prescription
I also mention hearing from people who wish their spouse could work with them, or who are slowly introducing their partner to the work. Those comments show interest. They do not settle whether a particular arrangement is a good fit.
A practical starting point is to talk about interest, expectations and responsibilities before assuming that enthusiasm means the same thing to both people. Someone may enjoy helping with a project without wanting every part of the job. That is a reflection to bring to your own situation, not an outcome demonstrated by this short.
Keep the full conversation in view
The clip is one part of our discussion about running a video business as a couple. Jessica and I talk about our own experience, and this moment focuses on the encouragement I hear from other video professionals.
