Experiencing Life Together While Running a Video Business
Running a business with your spouse puts a lot of life in the same place. In this moment from Married to Production, Jessica talks about one of the parts she enjoys: traveling together and getting to experience life with each other. The work brings us together, but the experience matters to us as people, too.
When I joke that we are together 24/7, 365, she immediately adds, “Not all the time though.” That little correction belongs in the conversation. Working together does not mean every part of our lives has to become the same thing.
There is more to a work trip than the deliverable
For us, a production trip can also be a shared experience. Jessica describes getting to travel with each other as a perk of working together. That is her account of our experience, not a promise that running a business with a partner works the same way for everyone.
It helps to separate two questions: what does the job need from us, and what do we enjoy about sharing the experience? A successful shoot still needs preparation, attention and follow-through. Enjoying the time together does not replace those responsibilities. It gives us another reason to appreciate the work we get to do.
Together does not have to mean identical
Jessica's closing line is a useful reminder to leave room for individual time. A couple can work on the same business and still have different interests, routines and ways of taking a break. The short does not give a universal formula for that balance. It gives a small, honest moment from our own conversation.
If you work with your spouse, try asking each other what part of the experience you appreciate most. Then ask what you would each like more room for. Those are different questions, and both deserve an answer.
